Clean GPU Driver Installation with DDU

DIFFICULTY: MEDIUM UPDATED: FEBRUARY 2026

>> INTRODUCTION

DDU and GPU Driver Installation

💾 WHAT IS DDU?

Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a tool that removes graphics card drivers completely.

Windows often doesn't uninstall drivers cleanly, which can lead to crashes, stuttering, or installation errors. DDU wipes everything clean – perfect for a GPU upgrade or driver troubleshooting.

⚠️ IMPORTANT WARNING:

DDU digs deep into your system. Create a System Restore Point before you start! We strongly recommend using DDU in Safe Mode.

1

Preparation

  1. Download DDU and extract the folder to your Desktop.
  2. Download the latest driver for your graphics card, but don't install it yet!
  3. (Optional but recommended) Disconnect your internet (unplug LAN or turn off WiFi) so Windows doesn't auto-install a default driver.
2

Boot into Safe Mode

This is the most important step for a clean removal.

Method 1 (Windows Settings):

  1. Start → Settings → System → Recovery
  2. Under "Advanced startup" click Restart now
  3. After restart: Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart
  4. Press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode

Method 2 (Shift-Click):

Hold the SHIFT key while clicking "Restart" in the Start menu. Then continue as above.

3

Remove Drivers with DDU

  1. Run Display Driver Uninstaller.exe in Safe Mode.
  2. On the right, select "Select device type": GPU
  3. Below that, select your manufacturer: NVIDIA or AMD
  4. Click on top left:
    Clean and restart (Recommended)
  5. DDU will now work and automatically restart your PC afterwards.
4

Install New Driver

After restart, your Windows might look weird (wrong resolution) – that's normal because there is no driver installed.

  1. Locate the driver installation file you downloaded in Step 1.
  2. Run as Administrator (Right click → Run as administrator).
  3. Follow the instructions:
    • NVIDIA: Select "NVIDIA Graphics Driver" (GeForce Experience is optional). Choose "Express" Installation.
    • AMD: Click through the setup, standard settings are usually fine.
  4. Restart your PC once more after installation.
  5. Only now reconnect the internet.

>> COMMON PROBLEMS

❓ Black screen after DDU!

Don't panic. Wait a few minutes. If nothing happens, restart the PC. Windows should load a basic driver.

❓ DDU asks for password in Safe Mode?

In Safe Mode, your PIN often doesn't work. You must enter your Microsoft Account or Local Account password.

>> CONCLUSION

A clean driver installation can work wonders for FPS drops or crashes. Now your system is fresh and ready for maximum performance!

Happy Gaming! 🎮
